New house built on land once used as elephant pen
Ashbourne, Queensland, Australia, July 12, 2020.
It’s the home of an antique shop that once had a huge elephant pen, and where the owner now lives with his two dogs.
Owner Michael Bostick says he was looking to expand and expand his shop when he discovered the old elephant pen in the backyard.
“It’s just one of those things that just caught my eye and I just couldn’t get it out of my mind,” he said.
“I just knew I wanted to put it somewhere that I could put it, that it would be a good place to live.”
The idea of having a piece of land that’s going to be used as an elephant pen was just an idea that just popped into my head, it was an idea I just went for.
“Michael Bostik’s Elephant Pen was once the elephant pen of the old Ashbourne shop.
It is now a home to his two pet dogs.

There was a place about an hour away, but then we had to go all the way across town and then there was a big road in between,” he explained.”
Then we had a bit of a delay with the road because we were trying to get our van, but that’s what they had and the van was stuck in traffic, so it was a bit frustrating.
“So I just thought I’d get my two dogs out and walk them up to the house and I could get the van to get the elephants to the door.”
The old site was still used for hunting and trapping, but Mr Bostisk said there were no fences in the area, and the site had been heavily damaged.
“When we were first looking at the old site, it had been totally cleared, and it was full of trees, and we had trees down the road that we had already had some damage done to,” he told the ABC.
“It was a pretty bad area, so I thought we might just have to go in and see what we could find, and that’s how we ended up with the building.”
Mr Bastick had found the place through the Facebook group Animals For Sale, which had been set up to find and sell animals for sale.
“People just wanted to buy the animals, and I was actually just kind of a bit overwhelmed with it, I just wanted it to be there, and then it just kind to sort of sit there,” he recalled.
“And then it was just, like, ‘Oh, OK, so that’s the place I should be going, so you can go and find out what it’s like.'”
The house had been put up for sale in late 2017.
The first two owners have since moved out and a third, who had bought the property from the original owners, is now living there.
But Mr Bopik said the house still had to be upgraded.
“We had to get all the trees down to the site, we had some fencing down, but we just couldn, you know, keep the fences up,” he admitted.
“At the end of the day, you’re just going to have to take a look at the history, and you’ll find out there’s been elephants living there for quite a long time.”
The new owners, Mr Boppick said, had had the same experience.
“They’ve been looking around, and they’ve gone and looked at the house, and in fact it’s not much different from the previous owner,” he laughed.
“That house was in the same area, but the old owners had been looking for something like that for a long, long time, and when they found the old house, they bought it.”
The building was once a thriving elephant farm.
